The Color Halftone filter simulates an enlarged halftone screen by replacing each grid cell with a brightness-proportional circle. That's the flat definition, and honestly, it's the whole filter. Open the dialog and you get exactly two controls: a max radius from 4 to 127 pixels, and a screen angle per channel. No frequency field. No dot-shape picker. No dot-matrix option. Every dot the filter draws is a circle, full stop.

For a poster-style effect on a web image, or a t-shirt mockup where "looks like halftone" is the actual goal, that's plenty. It stops being fine the moment your output needs to survive a real press or mesh, because radius and screen frequency (LPI) aren't the same measurement, and the filter never asks about the second one. Radius is a pixel dimension tied to whatever resolution the document happens to be at. LPI is a frequency tied to the output device and the substrate. Two files at different resolutions can share the exact same radius setting and print at completely different screen frequencies. That's why a radius number copied from a tutorial rarely reproduces the same look on a different job.

To be fair to the filter: it earns its popularity honestly. Is There a Way to Get a Real Halftone Screen Without Leaving Photoshop?

The catch is scope. Bitmap mode works on one grayscale channel at a time. A full-color separation means running the conversion once per channel — cyan, magenta, yellow, black, or however many spot colors your job needs — and manually keeping track of the angle offset between each pass so they don't collide into a moiré pattern later. Screen angle is the second variable, and it matters just as much. Each color channel gets its own angle so the overlapping dot grids form a small rosette instead of a visible interference grid. A classic CMYK set: cyan at 15°, magenta at 75°, yellow at 0°, black at 45°. Push two channels too close to the same angle and the print shows a moiré pattern instead of clean color — edges look overly emphasized, and the whole image reads as noisy. Photoshop's Color Halftone filter never puts this decision in front of you. Every dot it draws is a circle, at every radius, on every channel. If dot shape matters for the job — screen print registration, fine detail, a specific look a client is asking for — the filter's dialog simply doesn't have the control.

When Does a Dedicated Halftone Tool Earn Its Cost?
