01/ VERSE

Retro effects imitate the displays that could not quite show us what they had. A grid we were meant to see through. A beam that had already moved on. We remember these pictures as warmer than they were, which says more about us than about the tube.

02/ SPEC

Retro effects reproduce the structure of obsolete displays rather than adding a generic vintage wash: phosphor triads and scanlines from cathode ray tubes, shadow masks and aperture grilles, NTSC broadcast artifacts, e-ink, and low resolution handset screens. kott's retro family generates the mask per pixel, so it stays sharp at export size rather than tiling a texture over the frame. Reach for this category when an image should look displayed rather than printed, for game and interface pastiche, music artwork, or anything leaning on the specific memory of a screen. Keep cell sizes small on detailed sources, since a coarse mask competes with the features underneath it.
