Dithering effects trade colour depth for the appearance of it, one bit at a time. Nothing is really grey. Only black, only white, arranged close enough to fool the eye into remembering grey existed. Step back and the trick works. Step back far enough and it always does.
02/ SPEC
Dithering effects quantise an image to a small number of tones, usually one bit per channel, and use error diffusion or an ordered matrix to fake the missing gradation. kott's dither family offers Floyd Steinberg, Atkinson, Jarvis, Stucki, Sierra and Burkes kernels alongside ordered Bayer patterns, with a pixel scale control for grain size. Reach for this category for retro computer graphics, risograph and newsprint looks, or any export that needs to compress cleanly to a small file. Photographs with a real tonal range dither best; source images that are already flat or already binary have nothing left to diffuse.
